Channel 4 is free-to-air and freely available throughout the UK. They have the UK’s biggest free streaming service, All 4, plus a network of 12 television channels. Since Channel 4 was created in 1982, it has been at the center of national conversations and a catalyst for the creation of a world-beating production sector in the UK. Their purpose is to create change through entertainment. They do this by representing unheard voices, challenging with purpose, and reinventing entertainment. Channel 4's unique model—commercially funded but publicly owned—means that they're able to offer independent and distinctive, universal content that reflects the interests of different communities across the UK. As a publisher-broadcaster, Channel 4 commissions UK content from the independent production sector and currently works with around 300 creative companies across the UK every year.
My favourite thing about working at Channel 4 is how inclusive, friendly and welcoming everyone is. No matter what department you are in, everyone is always helpful and willing to have a conversation. I would encourage anyone considering applying to an apprenticeship just to go for it! Do not doubt yourself and overthink, the best thing you can do is apply and show your passion because if you don’t you will always ask yourself ‘what if’.
Channel 4’s vision is to represent unheard voices: Channel 4 has a strong commitment to representing the whole of the UK. It means using their strong brand and wide reach to elevate unheard voices – from diverse communities, emerging writers and producers, to those with different viewpoints or experiences.
Challenge with purpose: Channel 4 are here to challenge groupthink and hold power to account. They don’t challenge for the sake of it. They’re here to test boundaries, challenge conventions and inspire reflection and critical thought.
Reinvent entertainment: Channel 4 has a long-established role as an innovator in the creative industries across ‘entertainment’ in the broadest sense: they challenge themselves to continuously refresh what they do creatively; to develop new and emerging talent; to find new ways of reaching audiences; and to find new ways of working with their partners.
The C4 ‘4Skills’ team seeks out talent and gives it somewhere to grow. It doesn’t matter how old you are or where you come from; it’s what you’re passionate about that interests them. Whatever that may be, they're here to help you find that first opportunity. So, where would you like to go?
